In the words of the late great theologian, Stanley Lieber: "With great power comes great responsibility." Unfortunately, for thousands of years, kings, pharaohs, chiefs, businessmen, presidents, and priests have destroyed paradise to make a palace for themselves. Some even did so in the name of their God. Our world groans and longs for heroes, but they seem hard to find.
In Luke 4, a new king arrives and has to make the decision: will he use his great power for himself, or for the others? And it's a moment that will determine the fate of the universe.
I was recently invited to speak at Trinity Heights Methodist Church in Flagstaff, AZ, and this is the story I had for us. I hope you enjoy it!

Let's dig into Luke's Jesus and think about our weird human obsession with the end of the world - with the afterlife, judgment, and mercy - and ask ourselves - what if it's all just a waste of our time? What if we could be free from our fears and anxiety and invest ourselves fully in the good life and work we have today? Come into the kitchen and let Jesus confuse the Hell out of you for half an hour.

Sometimes a piece of the story haunts you, and maybe that's not a bad thing. Let's look at the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man, with a quick stop for a bit in the Cain and Abel story, as we ask: What if Jesus tells an afterlife story to actually talk more about our lives now? What is our responsibility to other people? What do we do with a God that protects and pursues God's own enemies?

Hi Lo-Fers! Hiatus is over, and we are getting ready to release some new episodes over the next couple of weeks. To ease back into things, here's a special episode where I share a sermon I gave a few months ago. I was asked to preach on what it means for Jesus to be King, and here's what I came up with - featuring stories from Ezekiel and Luke. I hope you dig it.

-If Jesus is right, what are we supposed to do with a God that good?
